What started as a ” I wonder if I can do it” challenge has turned into a week of discovery…..sometimes it was easy and other times very difficult. Being aware (very aware) of food choices has brought a lot of insights to me.
I like challenges! In life, in work, in play. I knew this about myself, but I didn’t realize how much until this week. There were times that it would have been much easier to grab “something” but knowing that I had a goal to accomplish, made me put forth a little extra effort to meet the challenge and make the right choice.
The big realization for me this week was in the food I consider “good” when I’m eating out. Before this week, I thought I was eating healthy with most of the choices I made when eating out. But this week, I realized that I don’t necessarily know that’s the case, because I don’t know what’s in there! My go to lunch place is Chipotle – brown rice, chicken or pork (sometimes), fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa and guacamole. But let’s break that down – the brown rice, while a better choice than the white, has other things in it, and I don’t know what they are. Same with the black beans – I have to determine what else goes into restaurant foods that appear to be whole foods. I’m simply saying not to make assumptions that the black beans are just black beans – there is broth added – does that broth contain MSG? Or other artificial flavors? We don’t know….and that was my realization this week. If I make black beans at home, I know its beans, salt, garlic and organic broth.
So, while I might be making a “healthier” choice when eating out and making these selections, I’m not making the “healthiest” choice. Does that mean I’m going to stop eating out? Absolutely not! Does it mean I will be doing it less? For sure, now that I’m more aware of the unknown.
Thanks for following along with my journey this week. I enjoyed sharing it with you this week and hope it provided insight to what we eat!
