Have you been hearing about this new food or seeing it appear on restaurant menus but not knowing what it is, much less how to pronounce it? Here are a few things to know when trying quinoa!
1. How do you say it?? It’s pronounced “keen-wah”.
2. What does it taste like? To me, its a mix between pasta and rice in texture and consistency. It really tastes like what you pair it with. Most quinoa is mixed with veggies, herbs and dressing. Some people say it has a nutty flavor, but I don’t really get that from it.
3. What is it? It is actually a seed even though it resembles a grain. And for those watching gluten intake, its gluten-free!
4. Why should you eat it? Its a complete protein source! It is also a source of food high in fiber, iron and calcium along with vitamin E and some anti-inflammatory nutrients.
5. How do you cook it? Just like rice – 2 parts water to 1 part quinoa (example, 2 cups water, 1 cup quinoa) combine water and quinoa in saucepan, bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, cover and let cook 10-15 minutes, until the quinoa becomes slightly translucent.

Hi Mike,
You can find Quinoa at the grocery store! It has become fairly common in the the last year. I’ve found it at both Publix and Kroger. At Publix, it is usually on the rice aisle. Let me know what you think when you try it!
